亀戸アートセンターでは、4月4日(金)より江頭誠 個展「おふとん遊泳」を開催します。

江頭誠は、日本独自の花柄毛布を素材に作品を制作する作家です。多摩美術大学在学中、実家から持ってきた花柄毛布を自室で使っていた際、友人に「ダサい」と言われたことが心に引っかかり、それをきっかけに卒業制作として大阪城をモチーフにした花柄毛布の立体作品を発表しました。大学卒業後は仕事の傍ら、原寸大の宮型霊柩車を花柄毛布で制作。この作品が「岡本太郎現代芸術賞」の特別賞を受賞し、本格的に作家活動を開始します。

以来、展覧会の開催や芸術祭への参加、他の作家やブランドとのコラボレーションなど、活動の幅を広げる中で、自身と毛布との向き合い方についての模索を続けてきました。

これまで様々なモチーフを花柄毛布で覆い、立体作品や空間インスタレーションへと展開させることで、毛布の持つ魅力と可能性を提示してきた江頭は、次第に、「毛布の作家」ではなく、毛布の「ムード」を生み出そうとしているのではないかという考えに至ります。

本展では、花柄毛布そのものから漂う「ムード」を際立たせ、作品へと昇華させる新たなアプローチを試みます。「なぜここまで自分が毛布にこだわっているのかもまだ掴めていないけど、なんかやっぱり愛せる存在」という彼の言葉からは、これまで長く向き合ってきたからこそ芽生えた、単なる作品の素材以上の愛情と、まだまだ探究の余地を残している花柄毛布の持つ可能性への確信が感じ取れます。

Kameido Art Center will hold Makoto Egashira's solo exhibition “Ofuton Swimming” from Friday, March 4.

Makoto Egashira is an artist who creates works using a uniquely Japanese flower-patterned blanket as a material. When he was a student at Tama Art University, he brought a flower-patterned blanket from his parents' house and used it in his room. His friend called it “tacky,” which stuck in his mind and led to his graduation project, a three-dimensional work of a flower-patterned blanket with Osaka Castle as a motif.

After graduating from the university, while working, he created a full-size Japanese style hearse using flower-patterned blankets. This work won a special prize at the “Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art,” and he began his career as an artist in earnest.

Since then, he has continued to explore how he and his blankets should face each other while expanding his activities by holding exhibitions, participating in art festivals, and collaborating with other artists and brands.

Egashira, who has presented the charm and potential of blankets by covering various motifs with flower-patterned blankets and developing them into three-dimensional works and spatial installations, has gradually come to the conclusion that he is not a “blanket artist” but is trying to create a “mood” for blankets.

In this exhibition, Egashira tries a new approach to highlight the “mood” of the floral blanket itself and sublimate it into a work of art. In his words, “I still don't know why I am so obsessed with blankets, but I can't help but love them,” we can sense his love for them, which has grown from his long experience with them, and his confidence in their potential, which remains to be explored. We hope you will visit the exhibition hall to see the creation of flower-patterned blankets.

1986 三重県生まれ

2011 多摩美術大学美術学部彫刻学科卒業

「戦後の日本で独自に普及してきた花柄の毛布を主な作品素材として、立体作品やインスタレーションを手掛ける。

2015年に発泡スチロール製の霊柩車を毛布で装飾した「神宮寺宮型八棟造」で「第 18 回岡本太郎現代芸術賞」特別賞を受賞。その翌年、毛布で洋式トイレをつくった「お花畑」で「SICF17」のグランプリを受賞する。

主な展覧会に「六甲ミーツ・アート 芸術散歩 2019」、「BIWAKO ビエンナーレ 2022」「六本木アートナイト 2023」など。

展示以外にアーティスト YUKI の「My lovely ghost」の MV や GUCCI のショートフィルム「Kaguya by Gucci」にアートワークで参加、2025年に東京ガールズコレクションにも参加。」
