このたび 亀戸アートセンター では、新山祐介 個展「gap is me」を開催いたします。
新山はこれまで一貫して、抽象と具象のあいだを揺れ動くイメージ、つまり「何かに見えそうでありながら確定しない像」を描き続けてきた作家です。本展では、その関心をさらに推し進め「像になりきらない隙間」そのものを主題として提示します。
新山の制作はあらかじめ完成像を定めることなく始まります。全ての線が意図的に交わらないよう構成することで、奥行きや前後関係が画面に固定されることを回避しつつ、人物やキャラクターを想起させる輪郭や動きが顕在化する瞬間を見出しています。画面に現れる像の可能性を探りながら、失敗と描き直しを幾度も重ね、実験を繰り返した結果、画面は平面でありながら空間を孕み、近づくとバラバラに、引いて見ると何かの像に見えるという鑑賞者の認識が揺さぶられる状態を生み出します。
今回の制作では、白地を基調とした画面が大きな役割を担っています。背景であり余白でもある白は、線や色の隙間から形として浮かび上がり、前景・中景・後景の区別を攪乱します。「空間を見せたいが同時に見せたくない」その相反する感覚が、画面全体に不安定な緊張感を与えています。
「gap is me 隙間が私」というタイトルが示すように、新山は完成されたイメージではなく、意味が定まる直前の揺らぎやズレの中に、自身の感覚を重ね合わせています。像と像のあいだ、前と奥のあいだ、理解できそうでできない、その隙間に現れる何かをぜひ会場で体感してください。
・作家ステートメント
本作は、線と線のあいだに生じる「隙間」から形が立ち上がる感覚を出発点としている。
ストローク同士の間隔や重なりの中から、人のような像や曖昧な形が浮かび上がり、それによって特異な空間感覚が生まれる。
形は前に出てくるようでありながら、同時にどこか焦点が定まらず、視覚的な揺らぎを含んでいる。
その結果、意図的に設計された錯視というよりも、見る側の知覚の中で自然にオプティカルな現象が発生する。
平坦な画面性と、奥行きや広がりを感じさせる空間性が同時に現れる状態を、制作の中で探っている。
Kameido Art Center is pleased to present “gap is me,” a solo exhibition by Yusuke Arayama.
Arayama has consistently created images that oscillate between abstraction and figuration—images that seem as though they might resolve into something recognizable, yet never fully do. In this exhibition, he pushes that interest further, foregrounding the very “gaps that never quite become an image” as his central theme.
Arayama begins his works without predetermining a final image. By structuring the composition so that no lines intentionally intersect, he avoids fixing depth or spatial hierarchy within the picture plane. At the same time, he discovers moments when contours and movements that evoke human figures or characters begin to surface. Exploring the potential images that emerge on the canvas, he repeats failure and repainting many times over, engaging in ongoing experimentation. As a result, the surface remains flat yet pregnant with space: when viewed up close, it appears fragmented; when seen from a distance, it resembles a coherent image—destabilizing the viewer’s perception.
In this new body of work, canvases grounded in white play a significant role. White, functioning both as background and as negative space, rises into form through the gaps between lines and colors, disrupting distinctions between foreground, middle ground, and background. The contradictory impulse—“to reveal space, yet not to reveal it”—infuses the entire surface with an unstable tension.
As the title “gap is me” suggests, Arayama overlays his own sensibility not onto completed images, but onto the fluctuations and displacements that occur just before meaning settles. Between image and image, between front and depth, in that gap where understanding feels imminent yet elusive—he invites viewers to experience firsthand what emerges there.
Artist Statement
This work begins from the sensation that form arises from the “gaps” generated between lines.
From the intervals and overlaps between strokes, human-like figures and ambiguous shapes emerge, giving rise to a distinctive sense of space. The forms seem to advance toward the viewer, yet at the same time remain somehow unfocused, containing a visual instability.
As a result, rather than a deliberately engineered optical illusion, an optical phenomenon occurs naturally within the viewer’s own perception.
Through this process, I explore a state in which flatness and spatial depth—an expanse that suggests distance and spread—appear simultaneously on a single pictorial plane.
