Following the first “Contemporary Handicraft Art Exhibition” held in 2022, Kameido Art Center presents its second edition, “Contemporary Handicraft Art Exhibition II,” a group exhibition featuring artists who work with materials and techniques commonly associated with handicraft—such as fabric, thread, embroidery, knitting, and sewing—while expanding them beyond mere technique or decoration into forms of contemporary expression.

In recent years, handicraft has been reexamined within new contexts, crossing boundaries between craft, fine art, fashion, DIY, internet culture, and other fields. This exhibition explores the expressive possibilities of handicraft while also focusing on the personal obsessions, bodily sensations, humor, discomfort, and sense of comfort that emerge through these practices.

By bringing together the long-established culture of handwork with the sensibilities and values of artists living and working today, the exhibition hopes to reveal new contours of what handicraft can mean in the contemporary world.

Artist Statement

Moving back and forth between society and everyday life, I create works as an attempt to process events occurring in reality within the reach of my own hands, and to return them to the world in a different form.

There are social structures and institutions that I cannot directly change. Yet I believe that continuing to express my intentions, and returning home to carry on with personal, everyday activities, are deeply connected.

I regard repetitive acts such as sewing, knitting, and mending—often associated with intimate, domestic life—as expressions of sustained intention, resistance, and responses to society. By altering existing materials, transforming them into different forms, and bringing them into public view, I explore the boundaries between art and everyday life, private activities and society, through the works themselves and the time accumulated within them.

Currently based and working in France.
