亀戸アートセンターは、前田裕 個展「co-form」を開催いたします。

前田裕は、国内外で絵画や陶芸作品を発表し、自然や生命の営みを独自の視点から探求してきたアーティストです。西洋と東洋の芸術やアニミズムなどから影響を受け、絵画や立体、アニメーションを通して、新しい視覚表現を模索しています。自然や生き物の形を、単純な丸や直線、曲線で再構築し、多角的に観察できるイメージを生み出しています。

本展タイトルの「co-form」とは、“互いに形作る”という意味を込めた造語です。会場には同じモチーフをもとに制作された絵画と陶芸作品のペアが並びます。

3年前に始めた陶芸の経験は、前田の絵画制作に大きな変化をもたらしました。焼成や手作業によって生じる予期せぬ変化を受け入れる過程は、これまで緻密に計算されていたペインティングに「偶然」と「ゆるさ」をもたらしました。現在の絵画では、アクリル絵具によるラフな下地に油彩を重ね、偶然性と意図的なコントロールを共存させる表現が特徴となっています。こうした作業のプロセスは、陶芸における土や色、質感の変化から得た感覚と密接に呼応しています。

近年はデジタルによる綿密な下絵から離れ、直感的にキャンバスへ描き始めるスタイルへと移行しました。その背景には、陶芸を通じて「完全なコントロールから解き放たれること」への実感があります。計画や技巧に縛られすぎず、量を重ねる中で見えてくる“ゆるさ”や“偶然”を積極的に取り込む制作態度は、作品に独自の味わいと生命力を与えています。

モチーフには、自然界の生き物が多く登場します。前田はその中でも、水陸双方に関わり、また生態系の健全さを示す象徴的な生物としてカエルの存在に注目しています。今回は寓話「蠍と蛙」に着想を得た作品も含まれ、そこには生物の本能や自然の摂理が暗示されています。

作品には曼荼羅が表すような、自然の循環や生命の営みといったテーマが一貫して表現されています。森羅万象をマクロな視点で俯瞰した表現から、近年は個々の生命や出来事にフォーカスしたミクロな視点へと移行しています。しかし、それはスケールを縮小することを意味するのではなく、個と全体が相互に影響し合う入れ子状の関係性という根本的な概念に基づいています。陶芸で体感した、偶然性や変化の受容は、こうした自然の循環や生命の重層的な関係性を絵画に取り込む手助けとなっています。

絵画と陶芸という異なるメディウムが互いを映し合い、補い合うことで立ち上がる前田裕の新たな展開にぜひご注目ください。

Kameido Art Center is pleased to present “co-form,” a solo exhibition by Yu Maeda.

Yu Maeda is an artist who has exhibited paintings and ceramic works both in Japan and abroad, exploring nature and the workings of life from a unique perspective. Influenced by Western and Eastern art as well as animism, he continues to pursue new modes of visual expression through painting, sculpture, and animation. By reconstructing the forms of nature and living creatures into simple circles, straight lines, and curves, he creates images that can be observed from multiple perspectives.

The exhibition title “co-form” is a coined word that conveys the idea of “mutually shaping.” In the exhibition space, pairs of paintings and ceramic works created from the same motifs are shown side by side.

Maeda began working with ceramics three years ago, and this experience has significantly transformed his painting practice. The process of accepting the unforeseen changes that arise from firing and handwork has introduced “chance” and “looseness” into paintings that were once executed with meticulous calculation. His current paintings are characterized by layering oil paint over rough acrylic underpaintings, balancing accident and intentional control. This working process closely resonates with the sensibilities gained from the transformations of clay, color, and texture in ceramics.

In recent years, Maeda has moved away from creating detailed digital sketches, instead adopting a more intuitive approach, beginning directly on canvas. Behind this shift lies the realization—gained through ceramics—of being liberated from total control. By not being overly constrained by planning or technique, and by actively embracing “looseness” and “chance” that emerge through repetition, his works attain a distinctive vitality and flavor.

Motifs of living creatures from the natural world appear frequently in his work. Among them, Maeda pays particular attention to frogs, which inhabit both land and water and are symbolic indicators of a healthy ecosystem. Some of the works in this exhibition also take inspiration from the fable The Scorpion and the Frog, suggesting instincts and natural laws at play.

His works consistently address themes such as the cycles of nature and the workings of life, reminiscent of mandalas. While his earlier works took a macro perspective to portray the universe and all phenomena, his more recent works have shifted toward a micro perspective, focusing on individual lives and occurrences. However, this does not mean he remains at a small scale—the fundamental concept underlying his practice is the nested relationship in which the individual and the whole influence one another. The embrace of chance and transformation experienced through ceramics has further enabled Maeda to integrate these multilayered relationships of nature and life into his paintings.

1984年熊本県生まれ。京都精華大学デザイン学科卒業。

 2013年南カリフォルニアに移住し絵描きとしての活動を始める。Hi-Fructose,Juxtapoz magazineなどのアート雑誌に記事が掲載される。2019年LAのSuperchief Galleyにて個展を開催。2020年帰国。NY、パリ、台湾、東京で個展を開催。

Yu Maeda

Born in Kumamoto, Japan in 1984. Graduated from the Department of Design, Kyoto Seika University.

In 2013, he moved to Southern California and began working as a painter. His work has been featured in art magazines such as Hi-Fructose and Juxtapoz. In 2019, he held a solo exhibition at Superchief Gallery in Los Angeles. After returning to Japan in 2020, he has presented solo exhibitions in New York, Paris, Taiwan, and Tokyo.

Active across a wide range of musical genres, TOHO goes beyond the traditional role of the tuba. In addition to supporting numerous artists and bands at music festivals and international tours, he also develops his own solo projects using effects and visuals.

In October 2025, he will release his second solo album, Breath for Ground, available on Bandcamp and cassette tape.
